Gymnázium Ostrov
Z některých škol odcházejí nic netušící absolventi do nelítosného světa, přáli bychom si, aby z ostrovského gymnázia vycházeli nelítosní absolventi a absolventky do nic netušícího světa!

The school curriculum

Our school is a selective school meant mainly for applicants to future university studies of all specializations. The teaching runs according to generalized curriculum, which is framed in a way that enables each student in the last two years to customise their preparation to their future school by choosing optional subjects. For example, future lawyers have more subjects in social sciences to the exclusion of natural sciences. Future engineers and doctors are the opposite case. This allows quality preparation for entrance exams to universities.

The aim of the educational policy of the state is to noticeably strengthen the number of future college and university students.

Grammar school is the school which prepares your children for studies at these schools either in natural, technical disciplines or humanities. Another advantage of grammar schools is that it postpones the fundamental decision about professional orientation to the threshold of adulthood.

Together with the help of the Pedagogical-Psychological Centre in Karlovy Vary where students are recommended suitable colleges or universities after evaluated Profitests, the school helps the students to make the right decision when choosing their university.

Our graduates leave our school with excellent language knowledge. English, German, French and Russian are taught intensively. The school keeps in touch with three foreign partner schools in Germany – with the grammar schools in Wunsiedel, Schwarzenberg, and Hof.

Together, we carry out activities that support language learning – short-term and long-term study stays for groups or individuals, collective excursions, trips, etc. Study stays are possible in the grammar school in Bayreuth, too. One-week study trips to England are our tradition as well. Our school also uses the PHARE funds thanks to which we were able to repeatedly organize language summer camps together with the foreign schools’ students.

Those students who are interested in achieving the internationally accepted Cambridge certificate are coached by our teacher in intensive courses after which they can sit for the challenging examination.

In the case of interest, students can also becoached for international language examinations Zertifikat Deutsch and Mittelstuffe Deutsch.

Thanks to the first class pedagogical education our students achieve outstanding results in natural sciences – biology and chemistry. They achieve first place in national and even in international competitions. Our P.E. teachers coach the students to excellent results in sports competitions. They often advance to national competitions where they achieve admirable performance. At the same time there are internal inter-class tournaments meant for the majority of the students. As well, we organize one-week ski and one-week summer sports courses. The school has established a long tradition of cultural performances. The teachers organize a great number of excursions, discussions and lectures with interesting personalities and experts.

In the modern classrooms of information technology students gain skills to operatecomputers and they work with current software, they attend courses of programming, and work with the Internet not only in class but in their free time, too. All this enables even those who do not head towards universities after the Maturita exam to succeed in many professions. We are assured by business and state administration circles that grammar school graduates become professionally familiarized with new jobs very quickly, thanks to the wide extent of education. The main objective of grammar school, however, is the preparation to university studies. Our students were successful this year and more than 80% were accepted.

The grammar school classrooms are equipped systematically with modern technology and teaching aids. It is common to use computers in all subjects and there are three computer classrooms at disposal.

As for extracurricular activities, students join sports clubs (volleyball, floorball and football), and take up French or Spanish. Students can attend English and German Clubs, Film Club and Pottery classes. In addition, our successful school choir has got a good reputation, too.

Our staff is highly qualified. The average age is 43 and there are 25 women and 20 men.

The general and professional teaching is carried out in newly equipped classrooms and laboratories. The school has its own library. We provide the students with quality service of a fit-centre, gym, sports hall, athletic field, tennis courts and school canteen.
